Our goal at ReadingOUT is to create a resource that can point young people, and those who care about them, to information on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) topics that will help them maintain or regain a sense of belonging and self‐worth. We want to connect young people to fiction that reflects their needs and their aspirations; biographies that demonstrate that LGBTQ individuals do indeed live meaningful and productive lives; and non‐fiction that answers the many questions they have about navigating their emerging identities.
To these ends, we have compiled a database of bibliographic information of highly recommended books on LGBTQ‐related themes for children and young adults from pre‐K through college age. Each title has received one or more awards and/or has been included on a list of notable books issued by prominent organizations in the library, education, and LGBTQ advocacy fields. These books have been vetted by experts in these professions as the best books available for young adults, teens, and children.
We are committed to making these books more accessible to young people and want to help you discover books that will address the specific needs of you and your children or other family members.
To accomplish this we’ve built functionality that goes beyond author, title, and subject searching, providing access as well by grade level, geographic setting, awards, and genre. You can
For example, we’ve included “picture books” under genres so that you can easily find a book to read to your little ones. Simply type “picture books” in the box on the Search Page and click on the search button. When the results are returned, click on the radio-button to the left of Genres (These appear after “Show title matches based on”) and you’ll wind up with a list of all our picture books. Scan the summary and subject headings to find the perfect one for your purposes.
You can easily tell if the book you are looking for is available at a nearby public or college library by clicking on “Find the closest library with this book” and inputting your zip code in the box marked “Enter your location” on the resulting page.
